The Expeditions

Aucayacu -Rivers and Forests-001

The Expeditions begin in Iquitos, Peru and travel up the Amazon and Ucayali rivers on an overnight riverboat to the small town of Genaro Herrera, then on to the Aucayacu Camp, on the Aucayacu river.

From here expeditions go further and deeper into the jungle, in the area around Aucayacu and, depending on the length of the expedition, go as far as the Galvez River, to the Matsés village of Remoyacu, near the Peru-Brazil border. And back.

Expeditions go out for various lengths of time, generally from 7 – 18 days with a small team of 3 – 6 people with 1, 2 or 3 travellers, depending on where and when you are going.

There is no regular schedule for when expeditions occur. Please keep in mind, the team also works with noted journalist and adventurer Peter Gorman, and is with Peter for the duration of those trips, which usually run in the months of Janurary, June and July.

Outside of these months, expeditions can be designed according to your schedule, plans, budget, endurance, desires, and so forth.

These journeys can be very challenging and travelers should be in excellent physical and mental condition.

You must have a positive mind and good energy.

The longer the expedition, the more difficult it becomes, both physically and mentally.

If you have no experience with the jungle, or are unfamiliar with wilderness, camping, or hiking – then it is recommended to begin with a shorter trip. Then, perhaps you’ll want to return again for a longer one! The shorter expeditions (up to 10 days) can suit just about anyone.

The expeditions are full of magic and wonder, but they are rough and rugged jungle tours.

There are dangers, absolutely.

Ruber, Juan and the Matsés and any and all of the team will watch out and take care of you the whole way through. However it must be noted that these are expeditions into deep jungle. Potential dangers do exist. Especially during the longer expeditions, as you move further away from civilisation, and you are literally several days walk from any town or village.

There are no-frills; no electricity, no running water, no mobile phones, no breakfast-in-bed.

The luxury exists in the majesty of the forest.

These expeditions are muddy, rainy, hot, humid jungle experiences. You will live how the locals live, eat how the locals eat, camp in the middle of jungle, sleep in hammocks (in beautifully crafted mosquito nets), you will walk for hours and days, you will get extremely sweaty, you will bathe in jungle rivers, you will be surrounded by trees and plants and vines and rivers and life.

You will be guided by an amazing team of people, including the Matsés.

You will be well taken care of every step of the way – yet, without anyone getting in your way.

You will be challenged, and awed, in ways you’ve never known.

Costs for the expeditions are very reasonable and depend on duration of the expedition, number of travellers, time of year, current costs of fuel, and so forth.

The cost includes all guides, all food & bottled water in the jungle, most moto-taxi transport in Iquitos, river transport (private cabins are booked for the overnight riverboat), some equipment (tarps for rain, rubber boots, hammocks, mosquito nets), pick-up and drop-off at the Iquitos airport.

The cost does not include international or domestic air-fare, or hotels, or food in Iquitos.
